I wish I could do more…

I wish I could do more interior design! There, I’ve said it. I was lucky enough to re-decorate my own home from top to bottom when we first moved in. That was thanks to my darling husband for giving me free reign . I’ve done a decent amount of client work in the past through Kestrel Design. And I fulfilled a lot of interior design dreams by creating my course and it’s matching workbook. You can take my course ‘SketchUp and Twilight for Interior Designers‘ on Udemy. And you can buy my workbook to match on Amazon.

My business growth has stopped in this direction due to my dratted cancer. So what can a girl do? Virtual shopping! And I figured why not share my lists and visions as I go? Here’s the disclaimer: as I searched for the items I picked up affiliate links I could use. That means if you buy any items from my links I may receive a small commission but there is no extra cost to you. I would recommend these items whether I was using an affiliate link or not. So rest assured that if I believe a product isn’t worth it, it isn’t here.

Prices correct as of May 2018.

I’ve no idea how many of these schemes I’ll be able to do – nor how often I’ll do them. But there’s a product that I’ve been drooling over recently. It’s been begging me to design an entire room around it. That product happens to be a tote bag with art printed on it by an independent artist. And as a result this blog post was born.

About RedBubble

While browsing my fellow artists’ work, I found this bag on RedBubble. It’s a site where artists upload their files for printing on physical products. RedBubble prints the products and ships them. Especially  relevent is that it deals with the administrative side of the transaction. Which makes it even easier for the artist who now never needs to worry about returns, ratings or refunds. The artist gets a commission – the amount depends on the product and also the amount they set.

So I’ve been scouring the site looking for gorgeous products that work with this scheme. The more you buy from sites like RedBubble the more you support Independent Artists. Talk about feel good factor!

I’m sharing my design ideas, visions, shopping lists and links. So for interior design concepts that you can reuse or modify, keep reading.

Putting together a Modern Country Kitchen Scheme

Today’s interior is a modern country kitchen scheme. Thats to say, a farmhouse style country kitchen with an industrial modern twist. Because who doesn’t yearn for a big farmhouse style kitchen? One with end-grain butchers block wood, a big working island and most of all, a farmhouse sink? Those sinks are also called apron-front by the way. Making it modern keeps it fresh and aspirational. It allows you to add all the quirky items that you’ve fallen in love with along the way. Finally, since a kitchen will always have that inevitable clutter. It’s important to embrace that and work with it to make it beautiful.

Modern Country Kitchen - Moodboard and a shopping list

Shopping List: Modern Country Kitchen

1 First of all, heres that focal point item I talked about at the beginning of this blog. I saw this tote bag and immediately had visions of a big farmhouse kitchen yet theres something about that grey background that keeps it fresh and modern. I very much heart it . It seems like an entire moodboard can easily be built around this one piece of artwork.

3 I’m obsessed with Big Ben, and this clock allows you to have his face in your home. Therefore I think it’s the perfect accessory for your modern country kitchen wall, in addition to some choice artwork.

8 I love the convenience of this trolley/island with storage and rather beautiful stainless steel worktop surface. It has a towel rail and grab rack on one side and another towel rail or moving handle on the opposite side. The stainless steel gives a great utilitarian/industrial feel which is especially relevant to balance the farmhouse element of the modern country kitchen to stop it becoming too ‘kitch’.

9 I think its high time we accept that when we install any new electronic equipment in our home we should seriously consider making it smart home compatible. Lighting still has a way to go in terms of designs incorporating smart bulbs but this Phillips Hue compatible pendant light is elegant and simple. It will set off your quirky art and quality finishes perfectly.

2 It’s easy to find adorable country-style kettles and at first I looked for the classic stove-top style in a cream or a mint or a teal. Yet then I saw this kettle and loved how it is both classic with its buttery cream colour and shaping but fresh and exciting with its beautiful diamond texture.

4-7 Admit it, we’ve all drooled over those pictures where all the mugs in a kitchen have been bought together, all match one another and all fit a perfect scheme. But in reality a mug collection is something that grows and shifts and changes rather organically. That mug you received from a loved one at Easter is hardly ‘aspirational’ since its bright purple and simply features the Wispa logo… but  its the perfect size and shape for your hands so you can’t throw it away. So embrace an eclectic collection and rejoice that you can invest in some of these amazing mug designs I found!
