wine-mini-bottles-syns-slimming-worldWine syns are high, not only because of their empty calories but because the alcohol will often push us to eat more that we wouldn’t normally have eaten. I’m partial to a glass of wine in the evening but it’s entirely too easy to have too much.

Wine Syns – My Solution

My solution is to buy mini bottles of wine. They feel luxurious because you’re having an entire bottle! The syns are kept to a minimum as you’re never tempted to finish off the big bottle.

Calculating Wine Syns

Calculating wine syns is a bit tricky because you have to know the AMOUNT and you also need to know the ALCOHOL CONTENT. Then also you need to look up the specific COLOUR. Then you look it up on Syns online. I’m guessing that most Slimming World slimmers are like me in that they can only remember:

  • white = ummm about 4.5 I think…
  • red = a bit more, 5.5 maybe?
  • sparkling = a bit less than white. Lets call it 4!

Am I right?!

Actually, it’s more syns than that, AND it’s much more complicated than that! I made this diagram to show you:

slimming world wine syns

Pretty complex huh?! First, you need to look up the colour of your wine, then the strength of the wine in the bottle. Each strength is specific to colour. So an 11% alcohol strength bottle of white is ‘medium’, but would be ‘light’ if it were red.

Then you decide how big your glass is – Syns Online gives you three options. A 125ml glass, a 175ml glass and a 250ml glass. In the diagram, I’ve given a 4th option – a 187ml mini bottle (or 200ml for sparkling)!

Calculating Wine Syns of an amount not on Syns Online

To calculate the syns in a mini bottle I did the following:

(Syns in a 250ml glass/250) x 187 = Syns in a 187ml bottle

Then I round UP.

To explain this: if you divide the syns in a 250ml glass by 250 you’re calculating how many syns are in just 1ml of wine (a very small fraction). You then multiply that by the amount we intend to drink (187ml). 2 Maths Scottish highers, 3 Maths Sixth Form Studies Qualifications and 2 years of a maths degree didn’t go to waste, did it?!

So if you’re drinking a random amount do the same sum, but with that amount instead of 187:

(Syns in a 250ml glass/250) x the amount in ml = Syns in that amount of wine

Or…. you could just use my handy charts 😀

So even with the chart, it’s a big FAFF to look up syns for your favourite wines. So here’s my guide to how many syns are in the mini bottles you can currently get at the supermarket!

Sparkling Wine Syns

OK so heres where it gets interesting – all of the mini bottles I’ve found are actually 20Cl (200ml) so the syns have to be adjusted accordingly. I also had to look up the Lanson Black Label and the Tesco Asti because their alcohol percentage falls outside of that given by Syns online.
